Android and iOS first, with a desktop release. Thingway is built phone-first — it is not a desktop app with a phone companion, it is a phone app that also runs on your desk.
No, and this is the point. Your documents are ordinary files in a folder you choose. You can export the whole manuscript or a single chapter to EPUB, PDF, DOCX, Markdown, HTML or plain text, as many times as you like, free. If you stop using Thingway tomorrow, your writing leaves with you.
No. There is no sign-up, no login, and no profile. You buy a licence, you get a key, you write.
Yes. Everything — the editor, spellcheck, thesaurus, translation, export — runs on your device. An internet connection is not required to write.
In a folder you pick, on your device. If you want it on more than one device, you point Thingway at your own cloud folder or sync over your local network. There is no Thingway server in the middle, because we do not run one.
It has been stress-tested at a million words, two thousand pages and three hundred chapters in a single file — on a phone. A full fantasy epic or a PhD thesis opens, scrolls and searches without complaint.
If Thingway is ever sunset, we will publish an unlocked installer that needs no licence key, keep it available for at least 24 months, and intend to release the source under an open licence so anyone can keep it going. It is written into the terms, not just promised here.
No. We cannot read your writing even if we wanted to, and we would not want to.
It is Scots. A hingway is the thing, the thingie, the whatsit — the object you are trying to describe when the word will not come. It seemed like a decent name for the place you go to find the words.
